What is irregular period?
Normal menstrual periods typically last 4 to 7days and occur roughly every 28 days. Irregular periods could occur fewer than 21 days or more than 35 days apart, missing three or more periods in row, and menstrual flow that’s much heavier or lighter than usual.
Common causes of irregular periods:
- puberty (when start period)
- the start of menopause
- pregnancy (a missed period is often an early sign of pregnancy)
- hormonal contraception like the progestogen-only pill, contraceptive injection and intrauterine system (IUS)
- losing or gaining a lot of weight
- stress and anxiety
- exercising too much
Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and an underactive thyroid gland can also cause irregular periods.
Treatment for irregular period
Medications are often the first treatment for irregular periods. If medication doesn’t help, surgery might be recommended. Possible medications include:
- Hormonal birth control
- Tranexamic acid:
- Pain relievers:
- Hormone therapy
- Antibiotics
- Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists
